It's like having a part-time job on the side!
I am currently training again for the London Marathon and I was reminded of something this week. Training for a marathon is a bit like having an additional part-time job. The journey is demanding, requiring not just physical effort but also mental strength and time management skills.

When you embark on marathon training, your schedule transforms. If you are not running, you are cross-training, and if you are not cross-training, the marathon is still on your mind. This constant engagement can feel overwhelming, but it is also what makes the journey so enriching. The discipline and dedication required to stick to a training regime teach you invaluable life skills. You learn to prioritize, manage your time efficiently, and push through physical and mental barriers.
One of the key aspects of marathon training is finding a balance. It is crucial to have at least one day a week dedicated to complete rest. This day of rest is not just about physical recovery; it is about giving yourself a mental break from the relentless focus on training. This balance is essential to prevent burnout and maintain a healthy relationship with your training.
Are you 1% of the population?
The commitment to marathon training is one of the reasons why only around 1% of the population ever runs a marathon. It is hard work, and you need to be prepared to put in a shift, much like an extra work shift. You need both time and flexibility in your life to fit in all the training. For those with demanding jobs or young children, this can be particularly challenging. However, it is also a testament to the incredible dedication of those who manage to juggle these responsibilities alongside their training.
For those of us whose children are now grown up or who have more flexible schedules, the commitment is still significant. Early morning runs, gym sessions, meal prep, route planning, researching , learning, and time to recover with a physio session or massage all add up. It is a choice you make every day to prioritize your training, and it requires a level of dedication that is truly admirable.
Rich Rewards
The rewards of marathon training, however, are rich and varied. The sense of accomplishment when you cross the finish line is unparalleled. You gain a profound understanding of your physical and mental capabilities. The journey itself is transformative, teaching you resilience, perseverance, and the power of setting and achieving long-term goals. The physical benefits are also significant, with improved cardiovascular health, increased strength, and better overall fitness.
Moreover, marathon training can have a positive impact on your mental health. The endorphins released during long runs can boost your mood and reduce stress. The sense of community among fellow runners can provide a support network and a sense of belonging. The discipline and routine of training can bring structure and purpose to your life.
Whilst the journey is challenging, it is also incredibly fulfilling. The skills you develop, the physical and mental benefits, and the sense of accomplishment make every moment of effort worthwhile.
So, if you are considering taking on the challenge of a marathon, remember that although the rewards are rich, and the journey is as important as the destination, it takes time!
